Immigrant communities can suffer greatly from inaccurate press articles and broadcasts, or poor and sloppy journalism. The role of journalists is crucial for the protection and integration of refugees – it is essential that an accurate picture of refugees and related issues is portrayed in the public eye and media. The UNHCR and the NUJ have published a code of conduct for journalists reporting on refugees, seeking to improve standards for journalists writing on this difficult subject. It aims to address the myths and misinformation surrounding the topic and incorrect terminology and commentary. It also provides guidance on interviewing, photography and filming.
