Training for Egyptian Radio Journalists

The UK based Media Diversity Institute (MDI) is calling for applicants to be part of a team of 12 radio reporters trained to produce ‘audio diaries’ showcasing Egypt’s diversity to be aired in the Egyptian media.

The training is part of the project ‘REBUILDING POST-REVOLUTION EGYPTIAN MEDIA: EMBRACING FREE EXPRESSION, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVENESS’ which aims to encourage a responsible Egyptian media, based on international standards and principles of free expression, diversity, inclusiveness, transparency and public accountability.

 

Successful candidates will attend a 10 day training course and then over a period of 9 months produce radio pieces under the guidance of an Egypt-based Project Leader. The pieces will then be broadcast on Egyptian radio and journalists will be paid for each piece aired.

We encourage Egyptians from all over Egypt to apply. MDI will cover all travel and accommodation expenses for those journalists who live outside of Cairo for the training, and also for any travel required to produce stories. Consecutive translation will be available from English into Arabic and vice versa for the training.

The objectives of the course are to:

  1. Produce radio pieces about Egypt’s diversity that will air on Egyptian radio.
  2. To be trained as radio reporters, gathering content as well as recording and editing. material into short packages for broadcast on Egyptian radio.
  3. To expand peoples’ understanding of their own communities.
  4. To understand different diversity issues in Egypt.

 

What you will learn during the training:

  1. Two days of theoretical training on how to produce quality diversity content.
  2. Three days of technical training on recording and editing.
  3. Four days of practical training, working in groups, and guided by the trainers, to produce pieces for broadcast.
  4. A final day of analysis, discussion and conclusions.

 

Criteria for selection:

  1. A resident of Egypt and someone who loves its people.
  2. A university graduate, with at least two to three years of experience in journalism, and published work that shows high standards in journalism ethics.  Radio experience is not essential but a background in journalism is.
  3. The ability to work a minimum of 10 hours a week on the project for nine months in 2012 starting in March.
  4. The ability to be available for the 10 days of training in Cairo in March 2012.
  5. The flexibility and ability to travel within Egypt and spend time in different parts of the country, and to work late hours, when needed.
  6. A professional command of Arabic, both oral and written, and good report writing skills. Conversational English preferable, but not required.
  7. Strong inter-personal communication skills, including being a good listener.
  8. Computer literacy and easy access to the Internet. You must own a laptop.
  9. Contacts in Egypt with different parts of the community, from intellectuals and politicians, to street vendors and farmers.
  10. Dedication, reliability and enthusiasm.
