The BBC has reported that president Omar al-Bashir has said he will accept the result of the vote, which was held after over 2 decades of civil war.
Almost 99 % of people voted for secession of the South from the North, in the referendum, according to preliminary results released by the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission (SSRC) in Khartoum, responsible for conducting the Southern Sudan Referendum in conjunction with its subsidiary in Juba, the Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau (SSRB).
Around 83% of votes in the south have been counted, along with 100% of those in the north and the eight foreign countries where polling was held. More than 3m ballots have been counted so far, with several hundred thousand still to come. The results were published by the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission, and officials have confirmed they are genuine.
Official results are due next month. The BBC has reported that president Omar al-Bashir has said he will accept the result of the vote, which was held after years of war.
The results of the referendum are being updated daily on the official website of the Southern Sudan Referendum 2011.
