Deadline: 10 October 2011
Region: Poland, Germany, EU
New media offer great opportunities for minority voices in Europe to be heard — but are all the wonders of the Internet and social networking a force for good?
In some corners of the open information environment racist expression, incitement to violence and hate speech are on the march.
A workshop to examine the good, the bad and the ugly of new social media and their impact on different ethnic minorities in Poland, Germany and across the European Union, will be held on 4 November 2011 in Flensburg, northern Germany.
The workshop is organised by European Centre for Minority issues (ECMI) and the International Centre for Research and Analysis (ICRA). It will discuss the theories and practical realities of ethnic online activism and it will identify trends in how minority communities are using social media at national and international level.
This is a must for people with experience and fresh thoughts on how best to monitor and use the web and the opportunities it provides. A call for papers is open, so those with something to say should take advantage of the invitation.
