Presentation of “The Image of Women in Moroccan Media” Study

Date: 8 March 2016

Country: Morocco, Rabat

Morocco_Women_Media_Study_CoverThe Media Diversity Institute will present results of the study “The Image of Women in the Moroccan Media in the Run-up to and During Local and Regional Elections 2015” on the International Women’s Day, 8 March. The event will take place in Rabat and it will be open by the UK Ambassador to Morocco, Ms Karen Betts.

Amongst speakers are Monia Belafia from the International Federation of Journalists and Vice President of the UNESCO World Alliance for Gender and Media, Bouchra Bouarara from the High Authority for Audio-visual Communication (HACA), as well as the Mauritanian journalist Maimouna Saleck who won the prestigious Anna Lindh Foundation Award last month.

The research, supervised by Dr. Abdelouahhab Errami, professor and researcher at the Institute of Media and Communication in Rabat, has monitored TV, radio and digital media outlets during the campaign for local and regional elections in Morocco in 2015. The object of the monitoring was the representation of women during the electoral campaign: what was the level of presence of men and women in the news? What was the media coverage of gender equality related topics? What was the gender consciousness in opinion articles and interviews? Was there an accurate coverage of gender discrimination-based violence?

MDI is presenting the Study in cooperation with the ISIC Alumni and the AEF (Association of Women Start), as part of the project “My Vote Matters Too” for increasing political participation and representation of women and other marginalised groups in the media. The project is supported by the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office.
