American journalists interested in reporting on global religion can apply for a fellowship.
The Knight Luce Fellowship, sponsored by the University of Southern California, offers stipends for journalists to write stories that illuminate how religion crosses geographic and ideological borders.
Staff reporters, affiliated freelancers and self-employed web journalists, working in the United States or abroad, who cover politics, social and cultural issues as well as generalists and religion specialists and who are American citizens are encouraged to apply.
Among the stories covered by the 2011 Knight Luce fellows were Wahhabism in Saudi Arabia, the burgeoning U.S. evangelical adoption movement in Rwanda and Liberia, advancing LBGT rights in Argentina, and Hazara immigrants in Pakistan and Greece.
During the six-month period, fellows will travel abroad to report on religion and social, political and economic conditions. The stories will then be developed for delivery on multiple platforms — print, radio, TV and online. Stipends range from US$5,000 to US$25,000.
