The biggest world gathering of journalism educators will be held at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in New Zealand on 14 – 16 July 2016. With the support of journalism education organizations worldwide, the 4th Congress is designed to provide a discussion forum on common issues and interests and a foundation for supporting the continuing development of journalism and journalism education around the globe.
The WJEC is inviting academic paper abstracts related to the wider issue of journalism education for presentation as refereed research papers at the conference. To submit a paper abstract, go to www.wjec.aut.ac.nz or contact the Steering Committee Chair, Verica Rupar on Verica.rupar@aut.ac.nz .
The deadline for submitting abstracts is 1 December. The organiser offers the UNESCO NZ travel grants for participants from the least developed countries and it might be possibilities for other travel grants.
Dr Verica Rupar, professor at AUT is determined to bring leading academics and educators to the event. “The Auckland Congress is fantastic opportunity to discus cutting edge journalism syllabi that lead to better journalism and better informed citizenry. Journalism and journalism education worldwide are at a crossroad and the congress is a chance to reflect on those challenges, to bring new ideas for advancing journalism curriculum and journalism itself”, says Dr Rupar.
The MDI which co-designed and co-run an MA Course in Diversity and the Media in partnership with the University of Westminster and which has worked with academics from more than 100 universities across the world supporting them in developing and teaching modules and courses which focus on diversity and inclusion, is invited to run a syndicate on Inclusive Journalism giving thus an opportunity to its alumni to share their experience in this particular concept of journalism.
“The MDI sees the Congress as recognition of the need to prepare future journalists for work in multicultural societies, where inclusion and respect for diversity are needed more than ever. We hope that our alumni from Europe, Middle East, North and West Africa, Indonesia, Russia, South Caucasus and China, will seize the opportunity to demonstrate how their students learn theory and practice which enable them to see their societies as there are – consisting of citizens with different racial, ethnic, religious, gender etc background. Diversity is nowadays a challenge, but it is a must too”, says Milica Pesic, Executive Director of the MDI.
The WJEC will work in three forms: paper sessions, panels and syndicates.
