Media & Democratisation in Cairo
The first post-revolutionary gathering of Egyptian and international experts to discuss the future of Egyptian media is going to be held in Cairo on 30 & 31 March. Cardiff University professor & Media Diversity Institute (MDI) consultant Dr Verica Rupar together with MDI’s Executive Director Milica Pesic will be attending the conference and will give a presentation on ‘The Importance of Journalism Training and Education for Democratic Media’.
Studies on media coverage of ethnicity and religion
The Media Diversity Institute (MDI), in partnership with Article 19, is producing two studies; one analysing media coverage of ethnicity; and the other, media coverage of religion. The studies will provide recommendations useful for the media, civil society and policy makers, and are due to be published in May 2012.
Lithuanian debate on media ethics
A national conference on media ethics in Lithuania will be held from 25th to 27th March in Vilnius. The conference is part of the Ethical Journalism initiative (EJI), a campaign to fight discrimination through freedom of expression and promoting the highest professional standards of journalism.
Diversity and the social network
Facebook is a marvellous tool. It may even have played an important part in organising the ongoing revolutions in North Africa and the Middle East. The authorities certainly seem to think so, which is why they try to suppress it. Egypt famously blocked Facebook in late January this year in a futile attempt by the Mubarak regime to stop the revolution in its tracks. Others have done the same.
Is macho culture holding back female talent?
On the occasion of 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day (8 March 2011), a research report from the Women in Journalism (WiJ) group reveals that women are still underrepresented in Britain’s newspapers, less likely to make editorial positions and less likely to write about hard news, politics and current affairs than their male counterparts.
Celebrating the birth of a Nation
The latest edition of the People’s Voice was published in the new state of South Sudan. Articles include stories on how southern Sudanese across the world celebrated the birth of a new nation, on a project that will provide electricity to rural areas in South Sudan, the beginning of a project that will give the new country its first highway, and finally, advice from a 115 year-old granny in South Sudan to those who will be building the countries future.

The Media Diversity Institute (MDI) works internationally to encourage and facilitate responsible media coverage of diversity. It aims to prevent the media from intentionally or unintentionally spreading prejudice, intolerance and hatred which can lead to social tensions, disputes and violent conflict.
