The percentage of women has increased by 22% in comparison to the last year within the reporting and writing categories. Last year only 7 out 25 candidates were women and four categories for Media Awards did not have any female representation. However, this year there has been a dramatic improvement, reports Mother Jones.

For example, this year there are three women nominated on the category of Feature Writing, while in 2012 there was none. Columns and Commentary is another category that has passed from zero to three women nominees.

Last year, many magazine writers and editors criticised the lack of women nominations in reporting, feature, essays and columns categories. They stressed the by-line gap within the industry where none of the mainstream magazines in the United States analysed had over 45% of articles written by women, reports VIDA.

The National Magazines Awards are organised by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) in the United States. Every year, editors-in-chief and creative directors select nominees for the industry’s top prizes.

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on May 2.
