“Please help get the reporters’ attention!” These were the words that a Russian construction worker wrote on a sheet of paper in Sochi, during the preparations before the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
The Committee to Protect Journalists produced a special report describing the biased reporting of the Russian media, who systematically ignored issues crucial to Sochi residents, directly affected by the arrival of the Olympics. Corruption, labour law violations, and other abuses related to the Games were hidden by journalists working for the local media. Under these circumstances, activists took on journalistic roles using social media and blogs to raise all the under-represented social, political, and economic issues.
